MONDAY - AP PSYCH |
FOCUS/REVIEW QUESTION: Quick preview on Split Brain Studies with Mr. Sinn (1:00-3:32)
What's it like to be a split-brain patient? A demo (I need 2 volunteers)
LEARNING TARGETS:
- Explain the difference between cortical localization and cortical lateralization.
- Explain the different specialities of the left and right hemispheres
- Correctly explain how split brain studies showed the differences between the right and left hemispheres.
AGENDA:
- Module 1.4c: Split Brain Studies PowerPoint and student demos. (Virtual Lecture)
- Lateralization of the Brain - How you have two brains in one:
- How well do your hemisphere’s communicate?
- Sit in a chair and rotate your right foot clockwise.
- Now look up and with your right index finger in the air, rotate your right hand counter-clockwise. Observe what happens.
- Now repeat the process but use your left hand instead of the right and note the different outcome. Why is this?
- With your R-Hand draw a square while your L-Hand draws a circle at the same time with your eyes closed. What happens? What would happen with a split-brain patient?
- Try saying the alphabet backwards. Now try saying it backwards while tapping a rhythmic pattern as fast possible your right index finger. What happens? Why?
- Do it again but this time with your L-Hand tapping the rhythm. Was this easier? If so, why?
- View video clips of actual split brain patients.
- The Divided Brain (Start at 2:28 - 4 min) from The Brain DVD Module 5.
- The Man with Two Brains - Severed Corpus Collosum from Scientific American Frontiers DVD Segment 7. (Start at 1:20 - 10:00 min)
.
- Done early? Go ahead and practice the terms with this Quizlet.
